Olympic Games 1972: memorial ceremony for terrorist attack victims : Memorial ceremony, on 6 September 1972, at the Munich Olympic Stadium, for the victims of the terrorist attack on the Israeli Olympic team during the Summer Olympics (l-r): Federal Court president Ernst Benda, Bundesrat president Heinz Kuehn, Bundestag president Kai-Uwe von Hassel, Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt, Israel's head of mission, Shmuel Lalkin, Israel's ambassador Ben Horin, IOC member Jean de Beaumont, and IOC president Avery Brundage. Arabian terrorists of the group 'Black September' had attacked the Israeli accommodation in the Olympic village, killed two Israelis and took nine hostages. The rescue operation in the night of 6th September at the military airport Fuerstenfeldbruck fails. The nine hostages, a Munich police officer, and five terrorists lost their lives. The games were interrupted for 34 hours, extended for one day, and finished.
