Image description

A procession to honour Malta's patron saint, St Paul, gets underway as participants come out of St Paul's Shipwreck Church in Valletta 11 February, 2001. The procession should have been held the previous day, but was disrupted by bad weather. The feast marks the arrival of St Paul in Malta in 60 AD. At that time a severe storm caused the vessel St Paul was travelling on to be shipwrecked on the Maltese islands, where he then converted the islanders to Christianity. Pope John Paul II will visit Malta next May during a tour following St Paul steps. DZL
