Image description

The boat named the Kota Mama (L), built of totora reeds along the shore of Lake Titicaca, sets out with it's auxiliary boat from the Paraguayan capital of Asuncion after sailing here from Bolivia and Brazil along the Parana and Paraguay rivers, September 16. The expedition led by British John Blashford-Snell is trying to reach the mouth of the River Plate at the Uruguayan city of Montevideo to show that traditional reed boats of ancient design could have been used to navigate the inland waterways of South America for purposes of trade and exploration.
