Kazimierz Switon, the leader of the campaign to erect crosses outside Auschwitz waves as he is arested by the police, May 27. Polish police protectively detonated explosives outside the Former Nazi Death camp and detained a radical Roman Catholic who boasted he had mined the area. Switon has led a campaign by fundamentalist Catholics and fringe rightist groups to erect hundreds of crosses at Auschwitz, to the anger of Jewish groups who regard it as a desecration of the largest cemetery of European Jewry. On Thursday, Switon had placed plastic explosives around the place to prevent the government removing him. PK/WS
