Jovanka Broz, the widow of late former Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito looks at the tomb of her husband in Belgrade May 4, 2001. Today marks 21 years since the death of Tito at the age of 88. Tito Josip Broz (1892-1980), late Communist leader of the former Yugoslavia for 35 years tried to create a balance among the nationalities of the country that would ensure stability as well as his control of the country. He created a system of "symmetrical federalism" that was suppose to ensure equality among the six republics (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Serbia) and two autonomous provinces (Kosovo and Vojvodina) although in practice it frequently played the nationalities off against each other.
