Image description

HIV positive orphans follow proceedings during a ceremony to mark the first importation of cheap AIDS drugs at Nyumbani children's home 13 kilometres outside of Nairobi June 12, 2001. For the first time in Kenya's history an AIDS patient received a generic antiretroviral drug (AZT) from Brazil using a loophole in the law which permits limited amounts for research. Kenya's parliament debates today a controversial bill that would allow the importation of generic drugs to treat AIDS sufferers, 700 of whom die of the disease every day according to campaigners.
