Image title
Henry VIII's deposition to convocation on his marriage with Anne of Cleves and questions to be put to Thomas Cromwell, 1540. In Henry's hand. Determined to nullify his marriage to Anne, Henry drafted in evidence a deposition and a series of questions to be put to Cromwell, who had been arrested on 10 June on charges of high treason. Henry testified that, when Cromwell asked how he liked Anne after their first encounter at Rochester, he had responded 'nothyng soo well as she was spokyn off and ... that yff [I] had knowne so moche before, she shuld nott have come hyt[her]'. The King also claimed that when Cromwell asked him the day after the wedding if he liked Anne better, he replied, not at all for by her breasts and belly he thought her no maid, and when he touched her he had no will to prove otherwise
