Video description

The various footage within this film which is in 2 clear sections, illustrate both colonial and traditional Burmese village life. The Europeans attend markets, have their photos taken, run timber yards and engage in ventriloquism as part of their social life. The local Burmese are undertaking labour activity, such as working in oil-fields, selling agricultural produce, and construction, as well as enjoying a social life with dancing and community celebration. (01.13 to 02.04) Young European with a baby monkey in the garden of his villa. (02.05 to 02.34) Country road. Small local girl in a dress and scarf dances to the music being played on an accordion by young local boy. (02.34 to 03.14) Amongst wooded hills, a gang of local men with a team of buffaloes haul a raft across a wide but not deep river. The raft is carrying a large salon car. (03.14 to 04.16) Ventriloquist [European, early middle aged] seated on a terrace outside house, demonstrates his ability with a cigarette in his mouth. (04.16 to 06.10) Caption - Moujme: Elephant teams working. A busy timber yard in the open country. Large mature elephant with its master on its back skilfully moves around pieces of large timber trunks with its trunk and tusks. Other elephants in the background are watched by European yard manager. (06. 10 to 07.15) Broad river in flat, open countryside. Elephant driver sits on his elephant's back while it washes itself in the river. Then slowly climbs out of the river up a slipway. Creator: Eric Geoghegan
