Some 20,000 people have been evacuated, including the residents of the town of Bano, 170 km south of Quito. The Tungurahua volcano, which in the local quechua indian dialect means "throat of fire," rises 5,020 mts above sea level and is one of 31 active volcanos in Ecuador.
