Image description

Enlarged Photographic Copy of a Photograph of the Moon', 1857. A framed, enlarged photograph of the Moon taken by Warren De La Rue on 7 September 1857. The caption reads 'The Original Collodion Positive was obtained in five seconds by means of a Newtonian Equatoreal of thirteen inches aperture and ten feet focal length.' This photograph was given by De La Rue to the astronomer and photographer Sir John Herschel on 22 September 1857. De La Rue was a London book-binder and paper manufacturer who had been inspired by the daguerreotype of the Moon taken by Whipple and Bond in 1851. In 1857 he built the motion-coordinated telescope which was used to take this photograph, in Cranford, and was confident enough to send his results to photography pioneer William Henry Fox Talbot. ©SSPL/National Media Museum
