Cypriot Archbishop Makarios visits West Germany 1962

Cypriot Archbishop Makarios and Berlin's Lord Mayor Willy Brandt (R) visit the walled-in houses standing directly on the sector border on Bernauer Street in Berlin, May 23rd 1962. Makarios, who had been banned to live on the Seychelles in the 1950s by the British, was President of the Republic of Cyprus since 1960, speaking out for Cypriot independance and to a dregree for reconciliation between the two ethnic groups on the island. In July 1974 he was ousted from power by Greek officers of the Cypriot national guard and had to flee abroad. In December 1974 he returned, again taking office as President. Makarios was born on August 13th 1913 in Pano Panajia, Cyprus and died on August 3rd 1977 in Nikosia, Cyprus.
