29.2 TEXTILES: COSTUME dalmatic: tunicle Italy (place of manufacture: cloth): England (place of manufacture: orphreys): England, Lancashire, Whalley Abbey (place of use): England, Lancashire, Towneley Hall (place of use) circa 1415 (cloth of gold): circa 1420 (velvet): circa 1415-1429 (orphreys) gold, silk overall: 2310 mm x 1220 mm Dalmatic or tunicle in brocaded velvet woven with diagonal bands with knotted crowns, stylized pomegranates, flowers and leaves. T-shaped with neckline curved at front and straight at back and short sleeves made-up from several pieces of cloth. Borders of brocaded and voided satin velvet with red ground and green and black pile. Outer edge with multicoloured silk thread fringe. Embroidered Opus Anglicanum orphrey bands at centre front and centre back depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary in multi-coloured floss silk threads and silver gilt thread worked primarily in split stitch and underside couching. Lined with blue linen.
