Image description

Clocks, Public Dover Castle clock (horloge du chateau de Douvres), 1550-1600. A fine example of the type of striking clock with foliot control employed in bell-towers from about 1300 to 1660. The regularity of this type of clock was not as good as that of a swinging pendulum, however, this system was almost universally employed before the pendulum was first applied to clocks in 1656. The Dover clock is one of the few clocks of its type to have survived unaltered: most foliot clocks were converted to pendulum control late in the 17th century. ©SSPL/Science Museum
