Artichoke or King protea, Protea cynaroides, from South Africa, engraved by J. P. Quilley after an original painting by Peter Henderson. From Dr. Robert Thorton's "The Temple of Flora," 1812, Lottery or quarto edition, not included in the original folio edition of 1807. The illustrations were a mix of aquatint, mezzotint and stipple engravings finished by hand. Dr. Thornton (1768?-1837) was a botanist and publisher who bankrupted himself producing what is now regarded as the greatest English botanical book.
