Image description

Arthur Haddy, English electronics engineer, c 1970s In 1941 Arthur Haddy (1906-1989), the chief engineer for the Decca Record Company, devised the first motional feedback, lateral cut disk recording head. During WWII the RAF needed to refine their sonar equipment to distinguish their sonar signals from the Germans and in 1943 Haddy was able to increase the frequency response of sonar signals from 8kHz to 15kHz. In 1944 this led to the pioneering recording technique Full Frequency Range Recording (FFRR) which Haddy was able to use commercially by inventing the FRI microphone. ©SSPL/Science Museum
