The Stars and Stripes is seen through a broken window of the battered U.S. Embassy in Beijing May 17, 1999. The embassy was the target of three-day protests by tens of thousands of Chinese students and civilians against the U.S.-led NATO bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade. China on Sunday marked quietly the sensitive first anniversary of the NATO bombing of its embassy in Yugoslavia. The bombing, which killed three Chinese people and sparked anti-NATO demonstrations across China, took place on May 7 in Belgrade, or early on May 8 in Beijing time.
