ACTIVISTS OF THE BNP STAGE A PROTESTS IN DHAKA, 1998-06-04 (photo)

Activists of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) stage a street march in Dhaka June 4, urging residents to take part in a planned "long March" on June 9 to southeastern Chittagong Hill Tracts to oppose a recently concluded peace treaty between the government and tribal rebels. The government says the treaty, signed last December, ended a 25-year insurgency in the Hill Tracts. The BNP and its allies say the treaty paved way for neighbouring India to "increase its influence in the tribal-dominated Hill Tracts and to eventually grab it. AN/JO/AA
