The National Socialist reporting writes on the back of the picture on August 24, 1944: "Hunger and misery in occupied Italy. Hungry, ragged, stripped of all necessities of life, the Italian population suffers unspeakable hardship after the occupation of their country by the Anglo-Americans. This mother in southern Italy is reaching out to obtain for herself and her child a piece of bread that the Anglo-American troops have snatched from the Italian population, in order to then throw it to the needy as a mild offering. The picture was taken from the American magazine 'Life' of June 19, 1944, which admits in the context of a report that the Anglo-American measures to ensure food for the Italian civilian population are totally insufficient."
