Image description

An 11ft wooden Nansen-type sledge constructed from ash on a hickory wood frame. It is made up of six uprights and cross-members reinforced with leather straps and iron braces. Drag ropes are attached around the uprights at both ends of the sledge. At one end the runner has become detached from the frame. The sledge was used on the British Antarctic 'Nimrod' Expedition led by Ernest Shackleton (1907-1909) and was part of the equipment taken by the Southern Party to reach the South Pole.
