Image description

painter : Muncaster, Claude drawing, entitled Building the pillars for the Tyne Bridge, by the artist Claude Muncaster The reddish metal framework at the front of this scene is part of the pillars for the new Tyne Bridge (opened 1928). Tumbled stones show where buildings have been demolished in Gateshead to make way for the bridge. An engine and tender are crossing the High Level Bridge in the background. The picture is painted on the roughly textured paper that the artist Claude Muncaster preferred. Washes of opaque watercolour in subdued colours were features of his paintings. Muncaster was a London painter.
