Image description

The sunken convoy. A frogman, who plunged into the waters of the Teufelsee (Devil's Lake), in the Bohemian Forest, to recover the body of a Czech student, saw in the bottom an entire column of German soldiers stiffened in cold waters next to horses and chariots. The diver, who immediately returned to the surface, said that the soldiers, with their uniforms in perfect condition, have fresh faces as if they were alive and the horses have glassy and wide eyes. It is believed that the convoy collapsed, during the last retreats in April 1945, in an attempt to pass over the frozen lake. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 10 March 1957.
