Pius X proclaimed Saint (colour litho)

Pius X proclaimed a Saint. The humility and greatness of mind of Giuseppe Sarto in a little-known episode. In the Conclave of 1903, when the cardinals' votes were focusing on him, the Patriarch of Venice, almost dismayed by the unexpected designation, first seemed to want to reject it. Merry del Val, who was secretary of the Conclave, was then charged with approaching Cardinal Sarto to know his final decision. I find him in the Pauline Chapel, prostrate on the ground, praying and crying. Merry del Val also knelt to make the embassy, and the future Pope answered him, “If God wishes this, His will be done!” Illustration for Courier Sunday, 6 June 1954.
