Image description

Joseph Lownes (1758-1820). The central inscription reads: The Underwriters of Philadelphia offer this tribute of applause to the bravery of Captain J.C. Brevoor. On either side it tells how Captain John C. Brevoor of The Ship Fair America of Philadelphia, and his crew, were captured by and imprisoned on a French Privateer in October 1798 but after nine days managed to escape and recapture their ship from the French and take them back to the port of Charleston in South Carolina.
