French naval officer who journeyed to Indo-China, China and Japan and participated in the Shimonoseki Expedition (1864). A. Les Bas's work survives in only one album. In the album is a picture of the frigate "Semiramis" at Woosing (China) which has led me to believe that Les Bas was a French naval officer on this ship, a French 35 gun frigate commanded by Admiral Jaures. Les Bas's work is characterized by heavy over painting of the negative. His works are almost "photographic paintings". In 1966 Michel Braive first published "Les Bas" works: during 1979/1981 I used Les bas work in my Japan Society exhibition "Japan: Photographs"...which was, after its opening in New York., widely circulated to major museums in America. No records exist of any work in any 20th century auction or dealer's sales of A. Les Bas work. 8in collection: all the known surviving Les Bas extant)
