Der amerikanische General Maxwell D. Taylor (l) traf waehrend seiner Inspektion der amerikanischen Armee in Europa am 8. August 1958 in Bonn mit Bundesverteidigungsminister Franz Josef Strauss (r) zusammen. Nach militaerischen Erfolgen im Zweiten Weltkrieg - u.a. betrat Taylor im Juni 1944 waehrend der Invasion in der Normandie als erster amerikanischer General franzoesischen Boden und konnte waehrend der Ardennenoffensive die Schluesselstellung Bastogne halten - wurde Taylor Direktor der Militaerakademie Westpoint. Von 1949 bis 1951 war er Kommandant des amerikanischen Sektors in Berlin. Den Oberbefehl ueber die 8. US-Armee in Korea hatte er von 1953-1955 inne. Als persoenlicher Berater Praesident Kennedys in militaerischen und geheimdienstlichen Fragen fungierte er von 1961 bis 1962, 1964-1965 als Botschafter in Saigon. Maxwell Davenport Taylor wurde am 26. August 1901 in Keytesville (Missouri) geboren und verstarb am 19. April 1987 in Washington.
