Design inspired by Shikibu Murasaki's 11th Century novel The Tale of Genji. Woman in Heian period costume with girl attendent. Cat with bell plays with the hem of her kimono. Kimonos in shades of pink, olive green, mauve, pale yellow and white- the latter blind-printed with designs, Woman: outer kimono with phoenixes, inner, mauves with cherry blossom. Cat hidden by kimono's hem. Young girl: outer kimono with formal floral scroll motifs. Figures are posed in a room with view of veranda and paling, and to rear a decorated panel with clouds and tree peony.
