Image description

Building the Palace at Dur-Sharrukin. In 713 BC Sargon founded a new capital for his empire below the hill now known as Jebel Maklub, a few miles to the east of Nineveh, and he named it Dur-Sharrukin, "Sargon's town." On a high terrace upon the north-west side he erected a great palace, adorned with magnificent sculptures and bas-reliefs, and with the walls richly decorated with enamelled brick. The city and palace took seven years to build. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920). Note: Image has been digitally enhanced to facilitate repro.
