Switzerland Italian Guest Worker Shelter Barracks Lucerne, 1961 (b/w photo)

After the Whitsun days, around 200 Italians arrived in Lucerne to work as farm workers on various farms. Due to a misunderstanding that they had been told in Milan that they came into large groups to large farms and stayed together for the most part, the disappointment was great when practically everyone was given a different address. Some of them refused to take up employment under these circumstances. If necessary, they were accommodated in the barracks in Lucerne until a solution was found, and all but one could tackle their field of work. Future farm workers looked out of the windows of the barracks in May 1961, where they temporarily moved into emergency quarters until their future was settled, which they were able to leave the following day.
