A visiting Israeli of French origin checks the colour of a red Golan Heights wine as he shops with a friend in the Golan Winery boutique shop. The Golan Winery has pumped some $2.5 million during 1999 in investments and expansion of its business and began a five-year plan which the Israeli government subsidises by 24 percent. The vineyards are expanding by 950 dunams (240 acres) and annual ouput is also on the rise from four to six million bottles. Many large businesses on the Golan are very concerned what will happen should Israel and Syria make peace and the Golan Heights be returned to Syrian rule. Picture taken February 10.
