India has started testing a prototype AIDS vaccine on animals and expects to hold trials on humans next year. India's National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) said earlier this year that some 4.58 million Indians were living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2002, a significant leap over the figure of 3.97 million the previous year.
