STRICT OF GIBLTERRA, bird's eye view: on the left the African coast, on the right the European coast. Before the construction of the Suez Canal, the “Columns of Hercules” (in which Abyla and Calpe faced, the current Ceuta and Gibraltar) constituted the only access to the Mediterranean Sea, which attributed to them strong relevance both from a commercial and military point of view.
