St Jerome, illustration from the 'Book of Hours of Gian Giacomo Trivulzio', 1500-10 (vellum)

The Book of Hours of Gian Giacomo Trivulzio belonged to this Milanese condottiero, a passionate bibliophile who was born around 1440 in Milan and died in 1518 in Châtres (Seine-et-Oise), today Arpajon. It keeps the use of Rome and It's printed in fine round humanistic font, leaving ample room to host floral decoration, but the most characteristic scenes of the codex are presented in tables framed by moldings painted and, in some cases, by a golden fence. The technique is excellent and the illustrations reach a remarkable artistic level. The book reproduced the coat of arms of the owner and his portrait is also close to St. Jerome, the saint who he must be devoted to.
