Joseph Murray Ince (Presteigne 1806 – Presteigne 1859). Oil painting on board, The Senate Passage, Cambridge, with the Senate House and Caius College by Joseph Murray Ince (Presteigne 1806 – Presteigne 1859), signed and dated J.M. Ince 1845. Senate Passage with Senate House and Caius College, woman in red cloak with stick in centre foreground. Senate Passage runs from Clare and King's Colleges past Caius College with Gate of Honour on left and Senate House on right to Trinity Street. Senate House was built in 1722-30 as Administration Centre of University. Gate of Honour - Edmund Gonville founded Gonville College in 1348 and Dr John Caius richly endowed it in 1559. The students go through 3 gates during their time in college; first through the Gate of Humility, the the Gate of Virtue and last the Gate of Honour which leads from the College directly to the Senate House where degrees are conferred.
