A port bow view of Endurance' (1912), a wooden auxiliary Discovery vessel, in the ice with a list to starboard, during Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914-1917. The ship can be seen with a covering of ice on the masts, yards and rigging. In the foreground, and partially obscuring the bow, can be seen ice hummocks. This photograph is traditionally captioned 'The Returning Sun'.
