A painted oval half-length portrait of a young woman, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, with dark brown hair falling in ringlets on her right shoulder, wearing a low cut red bodice with puff sleves, and fondling a brooch at her bosom with her right hand. The possible sitter, Jane Lauder, Lady Elphinstone, eldest sister of Elizabeth Lauder and daughter of Richard Lauder and his wife Mary (or Mariota) Scott, Lady Halton (or Haltoun) married Sir Thomas Elphinstone of Calder Hall.
