Image description

manner of Gerrit van Honthorst (Utrecht 1590 – Utrecht 1656). Oil painting on wood, Elizabeth Lauder, Countess of Lauderdale (d.1685/91) in the manner of Gerrit van Honthorst (Utrecht 1590 – Utrecht 1656). 1653. Painted oval. Half-length portrait of a young woman, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, with dark brown hair falling in ringlets on her left shoulder and wearing a gold low cut bodice, fingering a fold of her reddish cloak, edged with brown fur(?) which is draped from her left shoulder. Pendant to the portrait of the Earl of Lauderdale, and so probably his wife (they married in 1653). She was the younger daughter, co-heir and inheritrix of the estates of Richard Lauder (d. after 1660) and his wife, Mary or Mariota Scott, Lady Haltoune, or Halton. These included Halton Hall, from which Maitland took his title as Lord of Session (1670-82). Ham House, Surrey (Accredited Museum)
