‘Between Rogha Kot and Wana, Waziristan, 1920 circa. Photograph by Randolph Bezzant Holmes (1888-1973). An Indian Army column en route to Wana, the headquarters for the regular British and Indian forces in South Waziristan. Note the use of camels as pack animals. Well adapted to the sort of barren terrain encountered in the frontier regions and able to walk for miles a day, they were vital beasts of burden. From an album of 42 photographs mostly of which are produced by R B Holmes from the series ‘With the Derajat Column in Waziristan’, 1919-1920. The photographs were collected by Colonel G H Russell of the South Waziristan Scouts.
