Oil painting on canvas, Charles Brudenell-Bruce, 2nd Earl and 1st Marquess of Ailesbury (1773-1856) by John Hayter (London 1800 – 1891), signed and dated, on back: John Hayter pinx 1840. A three-quarter-length portrait, turned slightly to the right, gazing at spectator, wearing blue coat, white waistcoat, black stock and the order of the Thistle. Leaning on his right elbow against a carved and gilt console table. Charles Brudenell-Bruce, 1st Marquess of Ailesbury was born on 14 February 1773 at Seamore Place, Mayfair, London, England. He was the son of Thomas Brudenell-Bruce, 1st Earl of Ailesbury and Susanna Hoare. He was baptised on 24 February 1773 at St. George's Church, St. George Street, Hanover Square, London, England. He married, (i) Henrietta Maria Hill, daughter of Noel Hill, 1st Baron Berwick of Attingham and Anna Vernon, on 10 April 1793 at Florence, Italy.She was the mother of the 2nd and 3rd Marquesses and died in 1831. He married (ii) Maria Elizabeth Tollemache, daughter of Hon. Charles Tollemache and Gertrude Florinda Gardiner, on 20 August 1833 at Ham House, Petersham, Surrey, England. He died on 4 January 1856 at age 82 at Tottenham Park. He was buried on 12 January 1856 at Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire, England.
