An ultra-orthodox Jew blows a \"Shofar\", or ram's horn, as a massive ultra-orthodox \"mass prayer\" protests gets underway February 14 demonstrating against what the ultra-orthodox community calls the religious persecution by Israel's Supreme Court. A \"Shofar\" was used to rally biblical armies into battle. The protest, held by some 300,000 religious Jews, is one of the largest ever held in Jerusalem and turned many of the streets at the entrance to the city into a sea of black hats and coats. A counter demonstration drawing tens of thousands of Jews was held a few hundred meters away to support religious pluralism and the Supreme Court decisions in the cultural battle raging over Israel's identity 50 years after its creation as a state conceived as both Jewish and democratic.
