Image description

The injured US General Haynes is brought on 24 November 1945 with a Fieseler stork airplane, behind, on the airfield Unterbach with Meiringen in safety, on the right, with head bandage stands Captain Ralph H. Tate, pilot of the accident machine. On 19 November 1946 an American military aircraft, a Douglas C-53 Dakota (military version of the DC-3), crashed onto the Gauligletscher in the Bernese Oberland with twelve persons on board. All passengers involved in an accident can be rescued alive after an elaborate rescue operation. The two Swiss military pilots Victor Hug and Pista Hitz landed on November 24, 1946 with two Fieseler Storch planes, which were equipped with snow runners for the landing on the glacier.
