Ravensbrück, opened in 1939 approximately 50 miles north of Berlin. Originally the prisoners were what the Nazis called 'asocials' which included prostitutes, 'race defilers', 'criminals', Roma and Sinti, and political prisoners, especially Communists. Later included inmates from over 30 countries, including Jews. Ravensbrück was mainly built to hold women.
