Oslo 19421126. The German ship Danube took 530 Norwegian Jews to the extermination camps. The picture is from the quay of the American line, protruding 1. It is taken as the boat leaves Oslo. Many people believe it is Gunvor Hofmo in the picture (with handbag), when her friend Ruth Maier was one of the Jews on board. Unsure if it is 100 percent confirmed. The Jews were driven to the Port of Oslo with taxis, rail cars and trucks. The men came in railway wagons (caravan) from Berg prison camp outside Tønsberg, where they had been approx. one month. Women and children were driven in taxis. 767 were deported. Only 30 survived. Compared to other countries, such as Denmark, few Jews were rescued in Norway. Photo: Georg W. Fossum / NTB
