House with Flemish façade, Fort St, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo)

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Fuller view of the old house with the Flemish Façade. Mr Philip Caine ("I of M Times") came across an advertisement in an early Manx newspaper, dated 1818, referring to the sale by auction of a house in Fort St, known as 'the Frenchman's house'. Having seen many such frontages in the Bruges area, and in French Flaunders, one might hazard a guess that this may be the identified huose. It is known that many French folk found their way here at the time of the revolution of 1793."
