Durie House being demolished, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo)

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Times 23. 5. 34: 'Well, the house is being destroyed, and some fine rooms, walled in panelled oak, and a fine staircase, are now no more. The pangs of regret which the last occupants feel in leaving it can easily be imagined. Mrs Gill lived in it for nearly 60 years, and her parents, Mr and Mrs Killey, lived in it before her. It was a house to be proud of, and though situated in what, these days, is called a slum area, it was maintained by people who did take pride in it. There are very large and deep cellars below, aand on the floor of these cellars, an abundance of shingle. The large brass door-knocker, a fine old piece, was retained by Mrs Gill as a memento, by consent of Douglas Town Council; and this print shews what happened to the fine oak panelling.'
