On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "(Mid-winter) The demolition of the warehouse on the E side of Stowell's Lane revealed the 'backs' of this end of Fort St. Particularly the long rear annexe of no 1 ('Old Fort') - cobbled courtyard and quaint iron gate of which appear earlier in this route. This extends to the R end of the cemented portion. In Wood's Plan (1933), the rear of this house was in a line with that left on W, and the site occupied by this extension was an open space. Seq. - What the demolition of this old house revealed indicating association with the old Douglas Fort on the rocks nearby. The long outlet had a succession of peaked roofs like modern factories [sketch] - one seen in next print (or 1st of Old Fort cellar)."
