Image description

A red rose, to commemorate the victims of Auschwitz concentration camp, lies on the tracks leading towards the gate of the camp at former concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in Oswiecim, Poland, 4 October 2014. The SS separated the arriving prisoners from the deportation trains into unfit to work and forced labourers. German companies and enterprises used forced labourers for their production sites in and around Auschwitz. The SS earned four Reichsmark per prisoner, per day (11 to 15 hours), paid for by the respective German companies. Only 15 to 20 per cent of arriving prisoners from each deportation train were left alive to serve as forced labourers. The average live expectancy inÊAuschwitz was around three months. The camp was liberated by Soviet troops on 27 January 1945 and was turned into a memorial site and museum in 1947.
