Concentration camp in Auschwitz, 2014 (photo)

Visitors from Israel have places stones on the remnants of the gas chamber of crematorium V at the former Auschwitz concentration camp in Oswiecim, Poland, 10 December 2014. In January 1945 the SS tried to cover their tracks by demolishing all crematoria and gas chambers as they retreated from the advancing Soviet troops. Auschwitz concentration camp was eventually liberated by the Soviet Armee on 27 January 1945 who saved the 7,600 surviving prisoners. Around 1.1 million people were murdered in the camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The premises of the concentration camp, which is a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been a museum and memorial site since 1947, and was named 'Auschwitz-Birkenau - deutsches nationalsozialistisches Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslager' (Auschwitz-Birkenau - German national socialist concentration and extermination camp) in 2007.
