Retaliation in Tunisia. Twenty-five French planes bombed and machine-gunned the village of Sakiet Sidi Yussef, annihilating some of the rebels' anti-aircraft artillery posts, but also destroying a large part of the settlements and killing more than a hundred people. The air strike - according to the French local command that ordered it - constitutes retaliatory action for the incidents previously caused by the rebels themselves. The bombing of Sakiet Sidi Yussef aroused deep emotion and determined lively reactions all over the world. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 23 February 1958.
