Image description

Mountaineering tragedy in Valpelline. Crossing the Colle del Monte Collon, a pass that connects the high Valpelline to Valais, four Swiss tourists, all in their 60s, descended unconnected on the Italian side. They followed the glacier trail, then lost it and moved on the rocks. One of the four, the well-known alienist Bersot, descended down a colander looking for holds in the rocks. A boulder he had clung to came off. The poor fellow crashed going to smash on the scree below after a two-hundred-meter flight. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 21 August 1955.
