Athletics at the service of freedom. Ferenc Nagy, a former Magyar champion in the years leading up to the war, has recently fled Hungary in a way that is unprecedented due to his singularity. After preparing for the pole vault for months and months and having carefully studied the most convenient time and point to carry out his project, the athlete managed to make a spectacular leap beyond above the high and dense hedge of networks covered by high voltage electricity that separates the Magyar territory from the Austrian one. Just across the border, the Nagy presented himself to the Austrian police demanding that he be granted political asylum. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 17 August 1958.
